Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a
life by what we give.”
Having a positive impact on our community should always be a top priority. In an age where social responsibility is the big talking point amongst larger corporations, all businesses must take an active role in contributing.
If you’re a small or medium business with a tight budget, you may not have the funds to be as philanthropic as you would like.
But, here’s the great thing…
You can still find ways to give back without breaking the bank:
- Encourage your team to volunteer
Why not allow an allocated amount of time of paid time off so that your team can volunteer? Giving employees a specific amount of time each month, quarter, or year for volunteer work will improve morale. It will also increase your business’s community involvement.
- Purchase from other local businesses
Buy locally as much as possible, leave reviews, link to your favourite local companies on your website, and participate in Small Business Saturday/Sunday on your socials. Let’s support one another and uplift!
Find a local team or event to sponsor, you can help them out with the funds that they need and you can also get some friendly publicity by having your company logo on the team banners/uniform.
- Collection Jars
If you have a public space or office, get yourself a collection jar! Select a charity that is important to you or your team and simply set up a collection jar in the more high-traffic areas of your business. It might start off small, but that’s ok!
- Donate your skills
At ActionCOACH, this is one we are actively doing right now. Find a charity or group that could benefit from your skills and offer them for free! Help another business succeed by offering a helping hand.
- Share your space
If your business has a physical space, offer it free of charge for an event or meeting. Not only does this help non-profits save money, it’s another way to give your business visibility — since it brings people right to your doorstep.
- Think green!
One of the simplest ways you can give back on a global scale is to “think green.” Identify ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. This can include everything from adopting an in-office recycling program to switching to paperless billing. You can also make it a goal to only work with suppliers and other companies that are environmentally minded.
Volunteering your time to support a cause you are passionate about is something you will never regret.
It will enrich your life, familiarise you with your community, and connect you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective for the rest of your life.
Helping your community is an opportunity for you to grow as a person/business, and to better understand how you fit into the world around you.
Is your business helping the community in some way? Let us know about it in the comments, we’d love to share your venture on our socials!
